Coastal Concrete Column Reinforcement with Carbon Fiber – Scituate, MA

Coastal structures face some of the harshest deterioration conditions, and the residence along Oceanside Drive in Scituate, MA was no exception. The nine concrete support columns beneath the home had experienced years of damage from constant saltwater exposure, airborne chlorides, freeze-thaw cycles, and abrasive coastal winds. The columns showed surface loss, cracking, and signs of embedded steel corrosion—raising concerns about long-term stability and safety.
Ram Jack North East partnered with Structural Reinforcement Solutions to design a comprehensive, non-invasive repair strategy that restored the structural integrity of the columns while protecting them from future coastal deterioration. The project followed a detailed step-by-step process, beginning with full surface preparation to remove loose material, contaminants, and degraded concrete. This ensured an optimal bonding profile for the repair materials and carbon fiber system.
To stop active corrosion, SRS-4100 Steel Guard was applied as a vapor-phase corrosion inhibitor, creating a durable passivating film around the steel reinforcement. SRS-4000 Concrete Guard was then used to densify the concrete matrix, reduce porosity, and improve long-term durability—critical for structures exposed to saltwater environments.
Next, existing cracks were structurally repaired using SRS-3000 Low Viscosity Epoxy Injection Resin and SRS-2100 Rapid Cure Concrete Repair Paste, restoring internal continuity and preventing further moisture intrusion.
Once the columns were stabilized and conditioned, they were strengthened with SRS-600UNI Carbon Fiber Fabric bonded with SRS-1000 Structural Epoxy Adhesive. This high-strength composite reinforcement increased load capacity, improved stiffness, and provided long-lasting protection tailored to the demands of coastal environments. The CFRP system offered a seamless, corrosion-resistant solution that conforms to irregular shapes without requiring demolition.
Through the combined efforts of SRS and Ram Jack North East, the concrete columns were fully restored, fortified, and protected. The final system delivers a resilient, long-lasting reinforcement solution designed to withstand ongoing exposure to salt, moisture, and environmental stressors—ensuring structural stability for years to come.
