Commercial Wall Strengthening with Carbon Fiber

Lift equipment and crew applying vertical carbon fiber reinforcement strips to a tall CMU warehouse wall during a commercial wall strengthening project.

Rivers Edge Construction installed 28 piers along one side of a 20,000-square-foot warehouse in Henrico County, VA. During planning, the engineer identified concerns about the flexural capacity of the existing 22-foot-tall CMU block walls that would experience additional loads during foundation lifting.

Structural Reinforcement Solutions (SRS) collaborated with the Engineer of Record to develop a CFRP strengthening plan using 12-inch-wide SRS-600UNI unidirectional carbon fiber at each pier location. The externally bonded reinforcement added critical flexural capacity to the CMU wall while minimizing disruption to the facility.

Once the carbon fiber reinforcement was installed, foundation lifting proceeded safely without concerns of wall cracking or structural damage.
This project demonstrates how CFRP provides a fast, non-invasive strengthening solution for commercial structures requiring added flexural performance.
